FCL free time, demurrage and detention explained

A clear explanation of free time, terminal demurrage and equipment detention, with steps to reduce exposure.

What is free time?

Free time is the period allowed under the carrier quotation or destination tariff before additional charges begin. Calculation methods and included days vary by carrier, port and contract, so obtain them in writing before booking.

The difference between the charges

Demurrage generally concerns a container remaining in the terminal beyond free time, while detention generally concerns carrier equipment kept outside the terminal too long. Some tariffs combine them, so the carrier terms control.

Reducing the risk

Prepare documents and clearance before arrival, confirm the delivery appointment, monitor the last free day and agree who bears the charges. Do not rely on a verbal free-time estimate.
